Recording a payment, and why Callout never holds your money

Updated 10 September 2026·2 min read

Your client pays you directly, in whatever way suits you both. Callout keeps the record and takes no cut.

This is the question most people ask first, so here it is plainly.

Callout never touches the money

Your client pays you, directly. Callout does not receive it, hold it, route it, or take a percentage. There is no Callout merchant account sitting between you and the person who owes you.

What that means for you:

  • No payout wait. Cash is cash the moment it is in your hand, and a bank transfer lands when your bank says it lands.
  • No cut. The only money Callout takes is your own subscription, if you are on a paid plan.
  • No chargebacks through us, because there is no transaction through us to reverse.

The trade is that Callout cannot confirm you were paid. It was not there. Which is why the next bit is on you.

Recording it

Open the job and record the payment. You choose how it was paid:

  • Your own payment link
  • Cash
  • Bank transfer
  • Something else

It is stamped with the time and it is reversible, so a mistake is a mistake and not a problem. You can record a payment before the job or long after it, because real life is not tidy.

Deposit and final balance are recorded separately, so a job that is part paid looks like a job that is part paid.

If you use a provider that gives you a payment link, add it in Settings, Getting paid, and it appears on your clients' job pages. Callout only shows the link. It does not create the payment, attach an amount to it, or know whether it worked.

If you do not have one, leave it blank. Clients are shown how to contact you instead, which is how most of this work has always been settled.

Why the numbers only count what you recorded

Revenue in Insights, and what a customer is worth on their page, count money you have marked as received and nothing else. There is no other honest source. It does mean the figures are only as current as your record keeping, which is the same deal as a paper book, except this one adds up for you.
